Published in 1865, Iracema is one of the fundamental texts of Brazilian culture.

Part of José de Alencar's Indianist trilogy (O guarani and Ubirajara are the other books), the novel retains the multiplicity of classics: its prose is poetic, its treatment of matter is mythical, its air is epic.

A book that for many years summarized the Brazilian ethos in letters, still today offers many paths of interpretation in literary criticism, historiography, cultural and gender studies.

The love story of Iracema, the “virgin with honey lips”, with Martim is a romantic metaphor for the encounter between civilization and indigenous culture.

Valuing the Brazilian landscape and building an idealized past, José de Alencar created a myth that persists to this day.
