José Martiniano de Alencar (1829—1877) was a Brazilian writer and politician. He is noted as a writer, being the founder of the nationally themed novel, for his tenacious defense of slavery in Brazil, and for having been Brazil's Minister of Justice.
Illegitimate son of the priest and later senator José Martiniano Pereira de Alencar and his cousin D. Ana Josefina de Alencar, he was the brother of the baron of Alencar, nephew of Tristão Gonçalves, grandson of Bárbara de Alencar and second cousin of the baron of Exu . He graduated in Law, starting his literary career at Correio Mercantil and Diário do Rio de Janeiro.
He married Georgiana Augusta Cochrane (1846-1913), being the father of ambassador Augusto Cochrane de Alencar.
