Hugo narrated his masterful novel in a language that represented for literature “the same as the French Revolution in History”, according to critic Sérgio Paulo Rouanet.

The guiding thread is the character of Jean Valjean, who, for stealing a loaf of bread to feed his family, is arrested and spends nineteen years in prison.

Released, but socially repudiated, he is welcomed by a bishop.

The encounter radically transforms his life and, after changing his name, Valjean prospers as a glass dealer, until new events lead him back to the dungeon.
